Sharing his expertise in food distribution and logistics, Erik Holck, Director of Business Development at Port Jersey Logistics, spoke at the Freight Initiatives Committee (FIC) meeting on June 18th. The goal of these bi-monthly meetings, which focus on food production and distribution in New Jersey, is to help explain supply chains and the use of the transportation system and facilities to ensure a solid freight system that meets customers' needs. Erik was selected to speak on Port Jersey Logistics' role in the supply chain and pressing freight operational needs in New Jersey, such as:

  • Driver Awareness Education
  • Port Terminal Access
  • Port Terminal Capacity
  • Rail Infrastructure
  • Highway Capacity & Condition
  • Driver Accommodations

The presentation was followed by a Q&A session which touched on general questions about the complexities of running a food distribution center and adapting to Electronic Logging Devices. Other speakers at the meeting included Nolan Lewin, Director of the Rutgers Food Innovation Center Piscataway and Alex Rudnicki, Plant Manger of Aerofarms. Speakers at previous events have included IBM Watson Supply Chain, Novartis, Amazon, Wenner Bakeries, the railroads, UPS, and the maritime terminals. The Freight Initiative Committee, which is part of the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), supports the regional goods movement industry, as mandated by federal legislation. In addition to making recommendations on strategic transportation investments and policies to keep the region globally competitive, the Committee serves as a forum for dialogue on freight issues between the public and private sectors. The Board of Trustees includes members of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), NJ Transit and the Port Authority.
